medicine pills vitaminsVitamin D has been in the news a lot lately. A vitamin that was generally overlooked through the years has now been found to be very beneficial, and health aficionados have taken notice.

Now comes a study that implies that taking more Vitamin D can cut your risk of breast and colon cancers amongst other diseases. But you will have to take a larger dose than was previously thought in order to achieve these benefits.

The study from the University of California at San Diego says that 4,000-8,000 IU of Vitamin D is needed in order to cut the cancer risk. Generally, pill supplements come in capsules that are only 1,000-2,000 IU each. This means taking more pills than most labels say on them.

The study, done jointly between UC San Diego and Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, suggests that just 10% of all Americans are getting enough Vitamin D in their daily diets. Though Vitamin D is also boosted by sun exposure, with the advent of the Internet and technology, many people spend far less time outdoors than in the past.

There is controversy, however, over how much Vitmin D is OK to take. The daily recommended amount is a mere 400 IU, though the Universities involved in the study suggest that 4,000 IU is still safe to consume.
