Verizon to Begin Selling PlayStation Phone

February 15, 2011 | Business, cell phones, Technology

sony playstation This month, Verizon  began selling the iPhone after many months of speculation over when (if ever) the mobile phone giant would get the chance to. Though AT&T held tight to the iPhone for several years,  Verizon finally got a chance to be the second US carrier to offer the very popular smartphone.

Now, Verizon seems to have won again with news that in March 2011, they would begin selling the first ever PlayStation phone by Sony Ericsson. The new phone is said to be similar to the PSP Go, which was released in 2009. The PSP Go was a portable PlayStation but without phone service. The new one will have phone service through Verizon.

The phone was unveiled by Sony Ericsson in Barcelona, Spain, just before the Mobile World Congress trade show was scheduled to begin.

The license to make the phone is not exclusive to one maker, and this is the first time Sony has allowed non-Sony software to be used on any of their devices. This means that there is a chance that other makers may get a crack at the phone at a later date.

The phone will run Google’s increasingly popular Android operating system and will feature PlayStation games modified so that they can’t be played on any other device other than the PlayStation phone.
