Oscar nominated film director Tim Hetherington and a photographer was killed in the city of Misurata in Libya Wednesday. Hetherington, 41, who produced the film “Restrepo” was in Libya to continue his ongoing project to highlight issues during time of war and conflict.
Along with Hetherinton was Chris Hondros of the Getty Images Photo Agency and died just a few hours after the attack from sever brain trauma. He suffered extensive brain tissue loss and was revived several times before spending hours in a coma and died shortly after 10:00 PM.
Other photographers that were injured included a british Citizen and Michael Brown both had injuries but are expected to live.
Misurata is Libya’s third largest city and had been involved in intense fighting for several weeks killing hundreds of Libyans. This is not the first recent death of journalist in Libya. Last month two reporters were killed while trying to capture footage of the conflict in Libya.
Restrepo is currently available for Netflix streaming but it is not standard war documentary. The film takes you closer to seeing what men at war go through and suffer especially in Afghanistan.
Arrangements are being made to transport the remains of the two bodies back to the states. Of course, these arrangements must be transported out to a country that will allow air travel to finish moving the remains.
