Starbucks Offers Free Coffee For Earth Day

April 22, 2011 | Environment

Starbucks is offering a choice of brew, hot or cold coffee to any customer that show up with reusable mug or tumbler.  Why the free brew?  It’s Earth Day and they want to cut down on the paper or plastic products that are used each day by java junkies.

Starbucks serves more than 32 million people with these tumbler saving almost 1.45 million pounds of paper in US landfills each year.  The more tumblers they fill the better it is for the environment and our planet in general.

If you don’t have a reusable mug then you can certainly purchase one from Starbucks for 20% off.  This would still be way over priced compared to your local discount stores, but it’s still a noble effort to try and help during Earth Day.  A more noble effort would be to provide a discount every day for the those bringing in a reusable mug, after all they are saving money by not providing the cup or the sleeve.  Imagine the land fills that would be less filled just from one company making an effort.

Starbucks is a popular coffee house but a recent survey showed that McDonald customers were more loyal than Starbucks for where they experience their morning pick me up.  If every coffee house were to apply this concept it would be more like Earth Day every day.  In this poor economy it would make sense that each addicted coffee drinker would get a reusable mug.
