Imagine the horror felt when a parents received the text “Mommy I got buried” followed by “Mommy I can’t move my right hand” and the last “Please make it quick”.

That would be the last the Amantillo Family would hear from their daughter, 23-year-old, Louise Amantillo.  A student, she was one of a dozens of foreigners missing after the collapse of the prominent CTV building in Christchurch.

The King’s Education language school catered to students from Japan, China, the Philippines, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, and Korea. It’s collapse has left an international group of anguished relatives waiting to hear the fate of their loved ones.

Arriving Friday at the Christchurch airport relatives were taken to a community center where they would meet with embassy officials and Police for a briefing on rescue and recovery efforts.

Foreign Minister Murray McCully said “There will be families receiving the worst kind of news in the next few days,”. “This is not just New Zealand’s tragedy, it’s a tragedy that will touch many families around the world.”

“We think that your children are our children — there is no difference,” Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker said. Trying to reassure relatives that everything possible was being done he further stated “We are taking full responsibility to do everything we can to assist those families … and in the rescue operation.”
