Health Scare May Postpone Williams Return To French Open

May 5, 2011 | Health, Sports

Just last week,  Serena Williams told the New York Post that she was aiming her comeback for the French Open in May but from the latest health scare even Wimbledon, which opens play June 20, may be a stretch.

Williams had been reported by People magazine to have been suffering from a pulmonary embolism and underwent emergency medical treatment days after doctors discovered the blood clot in her lungs.   Spokeswoman, Nicole Chabot confirmed the report by People also stating the Serena had been treated at Cedars-Sinai Hospital on Monday for “a hematoma suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation.”

Williams, who hasn’t played a tennis tournament since winning her fourth Wimbledon title last July, has been mostly seen wearing a walking boot due to at least two operations for a foot injury suffered after stepping on glass at a restaurant in Germany.  It is possible that clotting around the injury site could have contributed to the pulmonary embolism.

Usually originating in a vein in the upper thigh, a pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that breaks loose and travels to the lung. Anticoagulant drugs such as Warfarin or Coumadin are typically used to prevent additional clotting but can cause bleeding in other parts of the body which may account for the treatment of a hematoma reported on Monday.

It was not immediately known what precipitated her condition, though by Wednesday afternoon it was confirmed by a spokeswoman that the 29-year-old superstar was recuperating at her home in L.A.

As for a French Open probably not and Wimbledon may be iffy, so all in all you can well understand William’s cryptic message left on her Twitter account that said, “Tough day.”  But she should be encouraged by the response of her tennis publicist Jill Smoller who responded later with, “This, too, shall pass.”
