Hackers a Problem as Internet Returns to Egypt

May 15, 2011 | Computers, Government

egypt protesters hackersThe last two weeks have seen a lot of upheaval, uncertainty, and possible revolution in Egypt. The government, in an effort to curb what was going on in their country, turned off cell phones and the Internet last week for several days. Now that web service has been restored, hackers have become a problem for the country.

This is especially true of official Egyptian government websites. Within minutes of the web going back into service in the embattled company, a group that would only identify themselves as “Anonymous” hacked into the sites, essentially taking them down from operation.

In a Twitter post, the group said that they did so in order to show solidarity and support for the government protesters.

The same group also supported WikiLeaks after the website was mired in controversy over sensitive US government cable and papers leaks that could undermine some US relations with foreign countries.

Because what they are doing is likely illegal, the hackers are loathe to come out in public and will only post anonymous messages on Internet boards. they said that this is similar to a December attack, but because Egyptian sites were easier to hack, less people were involved than in that attack this time around.

Tell me, what’s the difference between someone who hacks into your computer and someone who opens your mail? Mess with the mail and you’re going to jail. Start prosecuting these people like you would mail fraud and you’ll not only solve the unemployment problem by hiring people to catch them but you’ll be showing it’s a crime and you will be prosecuted.

Some secrets are best left secrets. If they don’t harm the public in general but protect the lives of those that are protecting the public why put it out for all to see especially the bad guys?

If all they were doing was supporting why hide themselves under “Anonymous”?
