Few Surprises from 2011 Academy Award Nominations

January 25, 2011 | Entertainment, Movies

film reel moviesThe 2011 Oscar nominations were announced today, and there were very few surprises across the categories.

As expected, “The King’s Speech” had the most nominations with 12, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.

The only real surprises were a lack of a screenplay nod for “Black Swan,” which got nominated in the Best Picture category, and the nominations for indie film “Winter’s Bone.”

“Winter’s Bone” was considered a dark horse to get any nominations, but managed to get one for star Jennifer Lawrence for Best Actress and another for Best Picture. This is the second year that that Best Picture category was expanded from 5 to 10 nominees, allowing for indie films like “Winter’s Bone” and animated films like “Toy Story 3″ to get nominations in the category alongside frontrunners like “The King’s Speech” and “The Social Network.”

“Toy Story 3″ also get a second picture nomination in the Best Animated Feature category along with “How to Train Your Dragon” and “The Illusionist.” Shut out of this category, surprisingly, was the Disney drama “Tangled” based on the story of Rapunzel. With the voice talents of Zachary Levi and Mandy Moore, the picture was a big hit with both audiences and critics alike, but failed to score a major nomination other than one for Original Song for “I see the Light.”

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards will be televised live from the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on February 27, 2011.

I have to tell ya, if this year is anything like last year it’s gonna be a snoozer. Everybody either looked bored or angry. I realize these awards are based on votes from their peers but if you went on votes of the people there’s be a whole different group nominated.

I feel your pain Maisy. I go to the movies to be entertained. Like the guy from facebook said the movie Social Network didn’t have anything of importants in it and really do I want to see how England’s king learned not to stutter. Plus isn’t it time to get over the “re-do’s”. There’s enough going on to make movies about that we don’t have to revisit the remake bin.

I agree with both of you. “True Grit” was okay but Tron-Legacy????? And why can’t you leave “Footloose” alone. That’s one of Kevin Bacon’s best and NO one will top it. They’ll just be short seconds. I say let’s get some good entertainment to vote on so I’ll WANT to watch the academy awards.
