Diabetes May Shorten Life by Six Years
As diabetes numbers increase across the United States, more studies are done about the why, how, and of course avoiding getting it in the first place. As more studies are done, some revelations have come to light. In the latest, a UK scientist says that the potentially deadly disease can snip six years off of your life.
Dr. John Danesh of Cambridge University made the news public this week after a study that scanned 100 other studies. Those studies included over 829,000 people from all walks of life in several different countries.
But the worse news is that the usual reasons diabetics die, such as heart disease or stroke, are not the only factors here. There is also evidence to suggest that diabetes patients may exacerbate other conditions such as breast cancer or even pneumonia. This means that these can now become contributing factors to death despite the fact that there was no past link between diabetes and these other conditions.
Though more studies need to be done, it has been implied in the past that some conditions may accelerate others, though it may be because they share common risk factors like obesity or high blood pressure.
The full report will be featured in this month’s New England Journal of Medicine.
