April 10, 2011 | Sports

The winner of the 2001 Masters Golf Tournament is Charl Schwartzel!  He won by just two strokes beating out Adam Scott and Jason Day after an exciting day in Augusta Georgia on Sunday.

Closing with four birdies in a row including a 20 foot putt on the final hole to finish with a 6-under 66 on the last round.  For the entire tournament is was 14 under par.  His closest competion was Adam Scott who shot a 67 for the day and Day with a 68 both finished with just two stokes too many.

Other notable golfers in the mix was Tiger Woods, Geoff Ogilvy and Luke Donald who were all four strokes back at 10 under par for the match.  Tiger made a huge surge for the lead in the front-nine of the first day being tied with Rory McIlroy and Schwartzel at five under.  Then his momentum slide as he missed some short birdie and eagle shots and drifted back to 10 under par to finish.

Scott took the lead for the first time on a eight foot putt for birdie on the 14th, he was 11 under with eight players within two strokes.  Most golf fans were hoping for a playoff involving mulitple players to take place on Monday, but Schwartzel the 26 yeare old South African closed the day sinking long putts and chipping in birdies and eagles.

So as for today Australia (Scott and Day) is denied the green jacket as it goes to South Africa with Charl Schwartzel.
