Trump Administration Ends Temporary Immigration Status For 200000 Salvadorans

  • Many Salvadorians in New York face uncertain future

The announcement that the administration will end temporary protected status, or TPS, for natives of El Salvador, comes after it did the same for about 50,000 Haitians and 2,500 Nicaraguans, and hinted it may soon eliminate protections for about 57,000 Hondurans. In El Salvador's case, that was a devastating series of earthquakes prior to its designation in 2001. If forced to leave the country, they could face grave danger in El Salvador.

Almost 200,000 Salvadorans who've had temporary permission to live in the United States for the past 17 years will have until September 9, 2019, to leave the U.S. or face deportation, the Trump administration announced Monday.

"They have resettled, established their families and lives here in the United States". The Department of Homeland Security said in a press release Monday, "The decision to terminate TPS for El Salvador was made after a review of the disaster-related conditions upon which the country's original designation was based and an assessment of whether those originating conditions continue to exist as required by statute".

The widely expected move culminates a series of similar decisions from the Trump administration to substantially curtail the use of Temporary Protected Status - a protection from deportation and authorization to live and work legally for nationals of countries that have suffered a disaster such as war, an epidemic or natural disasters. That decision prompted heavy pressure from the White House to end the protections, sources said, though Duke later denied accounts that said she felt distressed and disappointed by the interference from Kelly. She says that El Salvador has received significant global aid and that much of the country's infrastructure is rebuilt.

The statement noted that the administration will delay the TPS termination 18 months to allow Congress time to "craft a potential legislative solution".

The Raiders extended Derek Carr's contract last summer, paying the two-time Pro Bowl quarterback $125 million over five seasons. He is scheduled to work his final game Saturday in Kansas City when the Chiefs take on the Tennessee Titans in a playoff game.

The Department of Homeland Security, which administers TPS, did not respond to a request for comment.

"Allowing them to stay longer only undermines the integrity of the program and essentially makes the "temporary" protected status a front operation for backdoor permanent immigration", added Roy Beck, president of NumbersUSA.

The criticism wasn't limited to Democrats.

"It will be couched in nice terms, but it actually will be a dramatic move", Frank Sharry, executive director of America's Voice Education Fund, a pro-immigration reform group, said of his expectation that DHS will urge Congress to act. These are people who are American in all but their paperwork.
