Footage shared the the Shallotte River Swamp Park's Facebook page showed a handful of the cold-blooded reptiles breathing through the gaps created by their snouts in a pond frozen by a brutal cold spell that gripped the USA last week.

The American alligator can survive water temperatures of negative 40 degrees and can hold their breath for one to 24 hours, the park said in a blog post.

The video shows several alligators in the slushy, icy water with their nostrils in the air at the Ocean Isle Beach park.

Once warmer weather returns and melts the ice, the alligators will thermoregulate their body temperatures with a spot of sunbathing.

It might look like these gators made a big mistake in judgement, but it's actually a pretty clever trick they use to breathe, and experts say it's sort of like hibernation.

Alligators then enter "a state of brumation, like hibernating".

"Obviously, that is not optimal, being frozen like that", he said.

"It's a survival mechanism", George Howard, the general manager of the park, told local reporters on Tuesday, "They'll go wherever it is warmest".

"Just shows you how smart they are, and how unbelievable it is to see them do this exact survival technique, no matter how horrific it looks to us humans", posted Linda McMullan on Facebook. "I can't imagine it being very good for them if it was much over a week in cold water".

After nearly being eradicated in the early 20th century, alligators have made a comeback in North Carolina.
