  • Haley 'Iranian people are now finding their voice'

The United States will not recognize any possible talks between North Korea and South Korea unless the talks result in the ban of all nuclear weapons on the Korean Peninsula, US Envoy to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Tuesday.

"The United States supports the Iranian people and calls on the regime to respect its citizens' basic rights to peacefully express their desire for change", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters. "All freedom-loving people must stand with their cause", she said.

In a New Year's Day address Kim Jong-un said the USA could not start a war against his country because he has a nuclear weapons button on his desk and claimed the whole of America is in the range of his missiles.

The US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley on Tuesday praised the courage of Iranian demonstrators and said protests across the Islamic Republic were spontaneous and not driven by outside forces.

She noted that "dozens have already been killed", before harkening back to the failed Green Revolution in the first year of the Obama presidency. Hundreds have been arrested.

"We must not be silent", the United States' Ambassador to the U.N. stated. "We don't think we need a Band-Aid, and we don't think we need to smile and take a picture". She said they must seize the moment instead of letting the regime overcome popular opposition, as it has in the past. "[President Donald Trump] is willing to go to great lengths to stop all funding from Pakistan as they continue to harbor and support terrorism", Haley said. Nauert said she was not aware if the matter had been discussed in advance of the South Korean response.

"Moon wants to host a peaceful 2018 Winter Olympic Games, as well as open direct dialogue with his neighbour", Scott Snyder, senior fellow for Korea studies and director of the programme on US-Korea policy at the New York-based Council on Foreign Relations, said in an opinion piece written for The Atlantic.

"Perhaps that is good news, perhaps not - we will see!"

Haley also spoke briefly about North Korea, calling United Nations resolutions "a great achievement" but emphasizing that work remains to ensure those resolutions are enforced.

"The civilized world must remain united and vigilant against the rogue state's development of a nuclear arsenal".
