  • Egypt to hold first round of presidential election on March 26-28

Announcing the date, the national election commission said a run-off would be held on April 24-26 if needed.

The announcement was made during a press conference held by the National Election Authority and broadcast by state-run television.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi has not yet formally announced his candidacy for the 2018 elections, but he is widely expected to do so and to earn a landslide victory due to the absence of competitive challengers.

The results from the first round will be announced on April 2.

Shortly following his return to Egypt in early December, the 76-year-old former air force general stated that he would make a decision whether he should run for president after assessing the situation on the ground.

Egyptian rights and opposition lawyer Khaled Ali announced in November his intention to join the 2018 presidential race.

If Ali's conviction is upheld, he will be ineligible to run in the 2018 elections according to Egypt's Presidential Elections Law.

Egyptians living overseas are to cast their votes on March 16-18, he added, with second round ballots on April 19-21 if necessary.

The name of the winning candidate will be announced on May 1, Ibrahim said.

This will be Egypt's third election since the 2011 Arab Spring riots that overthrew the long rule of President Hosni Mubarak. "Thus I have decided not to run in the upcoming 2018 presidential elections", Shafik declared.
