Doesn't want to play under franchise tag in 2018

The running back told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler Thursday that he would consider sitting out the 2018 season or retiring from football entirely if the team attempts to use its franchise player designation on him again next season.

According to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, Bell would make $14.54 million if the Steelers franchise-tagged him again.

Bell has been pretty incredible in helping Pittsburgh get to this point in the 2017 National Football League season so far, as he has rushed 321 times for 1,291 yards and caught 85 passes for 655 yards, along with 11 total touchdowns.

Bell has a relatively lengthy history of contract disputes with the Steelers, the only team he's ever played for. It's a contest in which Bell, who was rested in Week 17, will once again head Pittsburgh's ground game, and that's his (and the team's) current focus.

The problem for Bell is the amount of money he wants.

Winter Storm Watch Begins Late Wednesday Night
The combination of ice from the freezing rain and light snow on Friday may result in hard driving situations. By the time the storm passes on Thursday evening, anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of snow will have fallen.

They certainly can do other things to alleviate that issue, such as restructuring Ben Roethlisberger's contract (he's now at $23.2 million vs. the cap in what will be his age-36 season) or releasing a few veterans. And if they win that, they will play in the Super Bowl.

Bell clarified his comments with a tweet later Thursday. The two sides could not come together on a deal, however, and Bell ended up holding out for the entire preseason before ultimately signing his tender shortly before the season.

Bell said: "Just get the numbers straight, exactly where we want them". "I know what I do and what I bring to the table".

Bell added he "hope [s] it doesn't come to that" regarding a possible stalemate between him and the Steelers. "I'm not going out here getting the ball 400 times if I'm not getting what I feel I'm valued at". But for the Steelers it could net them more now than it would letting him walk as a free agent this offseason and possibly earning a compensatory pick (likely a third-rounder) in 2019. I'm a guy they can kind of look at.

"I don't necessarily care about the money aspect of it", explains Bell.
