After a Virginia woman was found dead in the woods last week, apparently mauled to death by her own dogs, a friend and a veterinarian are urging police to find out whether there is more to the story.

Goochland County Sheriff James Agnew says her body was being guarded by two very large pit bulls.

"There was no evidence of any larger animal there", Agnew said during a news conference Monday, in response to the widespread belief that perhaps Stephens was attacked by a wild animal.

Agnew said that in his 'nearly 40 years in law enforcement, I've never seen anything quite like it'.

"We did hear from the medical examiner that Ms. Stephens was in her menstrual period", Agnew said when asked, but he emphasized he doesn't think "there is anyway definitively that we can say what caused the attack". He told The Washington Post earlier that investigators don't suspect foul play and that evidence recovered from the scene, including defensive wounds on her hands and arms, showed that the dogs were responsible for her death.

Barbara Norris, who says she was best friends with the victim, told WWBT that the dogs she knew would never turn on her friend like that.

"The dogs were a little bit neglected towards the end", Sergeant Mike Blackwood said, adding that the pit bulls lived with Stephens' dad on his property, outside in the cold". "They'd kill you with kisses".

A man who used to work with Stephens said she loved the dogs and was experienced in working with animals.

Agnew also revealed the captured animals being euthanized, after having received the family's consent on Saturday.

Sheriff's deputies arrived and spent 60 to 90 minutes attempting to catch the dogs - which the sheriff described as pit bull dogs. There are many dogs that may be identified as being of the "pit bull" type that are wonderful and loving family pets. "And I observed, along with four other deputy sheriffs observed, the dog eating the rib cage on the body".

There were no signs of strangulation, leading Agnew to say Stephens probably wasn't killed in a homicide, according to WTVR. Officials believe the dogs became more isolated because they were kept outside when they were previously kept inside. Detectives do not believe foul play is involved in her death, and the medical examiner concluded there was no sexual assault involved in the incident. "The injuries were very severe", Agnew said, as reported by Yahoo News.

The investigation is said to be ongoing.

Investigators have also looked into statements from other witnesses, including the possibility that Stephens was killed by someone or something else and that the dogs were trying to protect her.

Veterinary experts have also said that it's is extremely rare for a dog to just attack at random.

The dogs were captured, and authorities will pursue euthanization. "Once a dog tastes human flesh it is not safe to have that dog around humans".
