  • Senate Advances Kirstjen Nielsen's Nomination for DHS Secretary Post

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Trump nominee and White House deputy chief of staff Kirstjen Nielsen to lead the Department of Homeland Security.

A confirmation vote on her nomination is expected later this week, the report added.

Nielsen was confirmed 62 to 37, the narrowest-ever margin to approve a DHS Secretary. "I am confident that Kirstjen's mission-focused style of leadership will help her succeed in leading the men and women of DHS and ensuring we reform and improve the Department", said McCaul.

"It has been an honor to serve as the Department's Acting Secretary, and I look forward to working alongside Ms. Nielsen as her deputy as we continue to carry out the DHS mission of safeguarding the American people, our homeland, and our values", she said in a statement.

Despite increasing prominence in the national conversation, cybersecurity was a secondary topic during Nielsen's confirmation hearing. Nielsen, 45, is a former DHS official who is considered a protege of White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, a former DHS secretary.

"Throughout her confirmation process, Ms. Nielsen failed to demonstrate that she would provide the steady experienced leadership - free from political interference from the White House - that the department needs".

Nielsen previously served on George W. Bush's homeland security council.

Kirstjen Nielsen is now an aide to White House chief of staff John Kelly, who served as Trump's first homeland secretary.

As DHS secretary, Nielsen will head an agency charged with protecting America's borders, squashing cybersecurity threats and leading the response to natural disasters.

"There will be no on-the-job training for Kirstjen", Trump said when he announced her nomination in October, praising her "sterling reputation". But Nielsen told the Senate's homeland security panel that "there is no need for a wall from sea to shining sea".
