  • The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights a Britain-based monitor of the war said the missiles presumably Israeli targeted “positions of the Syrian regime and its allies” southwest of Damascus

Israeli missiles attacked a military position near Damascus overnight and Syria's air defense system thwarted them, Syrian state television said on Saturday.

Some of the missiles, which fired at positions in the countryside of southern Damascus, were intercepted by the Syrian Air Defense while others struck targets.

The surface-to-surface missiles were aimed at "military targets" to the south-west of Damascus, although Syrian air defences managed to down some of the projectiles, SANA news agency claimed. The incident reportedly occurred Friday night, with IDF planes attacking the Iranian base at al-Kiswah, south of Damascus.

Some media outlets affiliated with the Assad regime and Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah initially reported that Israeli warplanes targeted an ammunition bunker belonging to the Syrian Army.

An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on the reports, according to Haaretz.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recorded a video message for the upcoming Saban Forum in Washington.

Israeli leaders of late have issued several statements committing to preventing a growing Iranian presence in Lebanon or Syria, including the establishment of bases. The BBC published what it said were satellite images that it had commissioned that showed construction activity at the site between January and October this year.

This isn't entirely unusual within Israel, as the military censors often compel the media not to report stories.
