Swiss Muslim population to grow, migration or not

  • What proportion of Europe's population is Muslim?

"While Europe's Muslim population is expected to grow in all three scenarios - and more than double in the medium and high migration scenarios - Europe's non-Muslims, on the other hand, are projected to decline in total number in each scenario", says the Pew report.

The "Europe's Growing Muslim Population" report released on November 29 by the US -based think tank, modeled three different scenarios based on "zero", "medium" and "high" migration, to project Muslim numbers in 2050.

According to Pew's data, Muslims made up 4.9 percent of Europe's population in 2016, with an estimated 25.8 million people across 30 countries, up from 3.8 percent, or 19.5 million people, in 2010.

Europe's Muslim population to grow strongly PARIS: Muslims could make up over 11 percent of Europe's population in the coming decades, compared with just under 5 percent now, if legal migration levels are maintained, a report by a US-based think tank said on Thursday.

The proportion of Muslims among the total population of Britain could rise from 9.7 to 17.2 percent, it said.

Even with the most immigration, Muslims would "still be considerably smaller than the populations of both Christians and people with no religion in Europe", the researchers concluded. Germany's would rise from 6.1 percent to 19.7 percent and Italy's from 4.8 to 14.1 percent.

Under a high scenario, which projects the record flow of refugees to continue along with regular intakes, Muslims would make up 14 percent of Europe's population, or 75.6 million, in 33 years.

The Washington-based Pew Research Center's analysis of Europe's Muslim population follows a record influx of people fleeing conflict in Syria and other majority-Muslim countries in recent years, which prompted a debate about immigration and security policies.

Warriors to play without Curry, Durant vs. Kings
The 33-year-old has played in 18 of Golden State's 20 games this seaosn, averaging 6.3 points-per-game. Curry has a right hand contusion, and Durant has been nursing a lingering sprained left ankle.

The countries covered in the study included the 28 European Union members, plus Norway and Switzerland.

Muslim immigrants have been a politically sensitive topic in Europe following the influx of newcomers between 2014 and 2016.

Under the "zero migration" scenario, an estimated 30 million Muslims would make up 7.4% of Europe's population by 2050 compared with the 4.9% they made up previous year, the report projected. Under these conditions, Muslims could comprise 11.2 percent (59 million) of Europe's population in 2050.

The research centre sets out three different projections for the coming decades, according to varying estimates of future migration levels.

The study was based on census and survey data, population registers, immigration data and other sources. Under the "medium" scenario, it would rise to 517 million people, while in the "high" migration scenario would take it to 539 million.

Although smaller European countries are expected to see Muslim populations grow significantly, others - including large nations like Poland - are projected to continue to have very few Muslims in 2050, in all scenarios.

Using the high scenario, Germany would have the largest Muslim population, 17.5 million, because of the large number of refugees it has accepted in recent years.

This is because the United Kingdom is a popular destination for Muslim migrants but has accepted relatively few refugees compared to other European countries such as Germany.
