  • Saudi Arabia 'intercepts another Houthi missile'

The former Yemeni president's break with the Houthis came after five days of bitter clashes around the capital, Sana'a, between his supporters and those of the Iranian-backed Houthi militia.

He added: "We will deal with them in a positive way and what happened to Yemen is enough".

According to the Saudi Press Agency, Maliki said the "control of these types of weapons by terrorist organisations, including Al-Houthi armed militias, represents a threat to regional and global security". The coalition had also imposed a blockade on the country, allowing occasional humanitarian access, with the aim of reinstating the internationally recognised government of Mr Saleh's successor, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. Arab media is reporting that the former president's supporters have gained control of key government installations in the capital, including the defense ministry, the interior ministry and Sana'a Airport.

For coalition, former president betrayed Arabs by joining Huthi, a militia that emerged at end of last century to improve living conditions of Zaydí minority (a branch of Shi'a Islam that follows one-third of Yemenis) and that Saudi Arabia considers an Inst Rumeno of his rival Iran. They spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing reprisals.

Saudi Arabia says that it has intercepted a second missile fired towards the country by Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Houthi fighters and battalions loyal to Saleh made common cause to fan out through Yemen in 2015 and have weathered thousands of air strikes launched by neighboring Saudi Arabia and its allies. The country has since fallen into chaos and Mr Saleh later joined the Houthis to drive Mr Hadi out of the capital in 2014.

The United Nations has warned Yemen faces mass starvation unless the Saudi-led coalition allows more food aid to enter the impoverished country. "The priority has been and still is to confront the forces of aggression".

In response to Saleh's speech, Houthi leader Abdel-Malek al-Houthi stressed the need for dialogue in another televised appearance in Saturday, and called on Saleh to "be more mature".

The United Nations envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, and the ICRC urged the parties to avoid targeting civilians.

But Saleh's message didn't sit well with the Houthis, whose spokesman called his remarks "a coup against our alliance and partnership".

A statement from Saleh's party called for its loyal armed tribes and supporters to fight against Houthis.

A statement from Saleh's GPC appealed on Saturday to security and military forces and all public employees to be neutral and not to implement instructions given by the Houthis in all provinces.
