IMPACT Assistant General Secretary Ashley Connolly confirmed the receipt of correspondence that "accepts and recognises the union for collective bargaining purposes".

Ryanair Holdings faces its first-ever pilot strike on the Friday before Christmas as a German union it has promised to recognize makes a show of force following a breakdown in initial negotiations.

The company said it would only negotiate with pilots who worked for the company and VC officials and so the talks were halted.

In a statement, Ryanair said it had sent a letter confirming that is recognising Impact and its Ryanair Company Pilot Council.

In a statement after the meeting, IMPACT - which includes the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association - said: "The union reiterated its position that its mandate for strike action can be implemented, after the required notice is given, in the absence of a timely agreement".

The union said it will meet Ryanair management on 3 January to agree a comprehensive recognition agreement that will establish collective bargaining procedures at the airline. The German union's hardball move contrasts with solid progress in Ryanair's home country of Ireland, showing just how bumpy the path toward a deal remains.

Those were the first since Ryanair had offered on Friday to recognise trade unions, prompting the suspension of strike action planned over the busy festive period - when many travellers head overseas for Christmas and New Year celebrations. "Ryanair's delegation did not even enter the room", union President Ilja Schulz said. "We hope to be able to say something with more substance before too long".

Amtrak Train Derails, Crashes Onto Interstate In Washington
At least three people have died and 100 injured after a train derailed while crossing a highway bridge in Washington state. A USA official said the death toll was likely to rise.

However, the group cancelled the strikes after Ryanair's offer to talk about the trade unions' complaints, covering areas such as the carrier's strategy as well as pay and employment models in the fast-growing budget airline industry.

"Ryanair has also submitted a set of proposals on pay and conditions, procedures and dispute resolution for its Irish-based pilots, and looks forward to concluding an early agreement on these issues with its Irish Ryanair pilot company council".

"All pilots directly employed by Ryanair will be called to strike", it said.

It followed cancellation of a planned 24-hour strike by Dublin-based pilots.

In Germany, Cockpit said it regretted the travel disruptions and urged passengers to contact Ryanair about the impact on flights.

IMPACT has given Ryanair until midday today to come up with a document and said strike action can be implemented in the absence of a timely agreement.
