Ryanair pilots' strike for tomorrow called off

  • Late last night we received the good news that the Ryanair pilot strike planned for this coming Wednesday has been called off indefinitely

Ryanair, meanwhile, said last week they had chose to invite unions in Ireland, UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal to talks in a bid to avert the planned industrial action.

In a statement issued in the aftermath of the meeting, IMPACT said that Ryanair "were unable to give the union a piece of paper to confirm" the fact that Ryanair recognised IMPACT/IALPA (Irish Air Line Pilots' Association) for collective bargaining purposes, something that Ryanair had acknowledged publicly in recent days.

Ryanair will now change its long-standing policy of not recognising unions, starting this week with meetings with Irish, German and Portugese pilot unions, writes Cillian Sherlock.

IMPACT said it would meet Ryanair on Tuesday evening, and hoped the suspension of industrial action would remove any uncertainty for passengers intending to travel on Wednesday.

There was some confusion as to whether Ryanair would also recognize unions representing other workers but on Tuesday it confirmed it would also recognize cabin crew unions and would seek talks with them.

"If anything it accentuates the Ryanair model", he said.

Mr O'Leary said the move was "putting the needs of our customers first, and avoiding disruption to their Christmas flights".

Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary told Reuters in an interview that he saw union recognition as offering opportunities for expansion and to help keep staff costs down.

It wants the company to clarify the detail of it's agreement on Friday - to recognise unions for the first time in the company's history.

Over the weekend, pilots called off a threatened pre-Christmas one-day strike that was planned for tomorrow (December 20th).

Pilots suspended their strike to allow for talks but reserved the right to resume their industrial action if Ryanair does not engage in good faith.
