  • Russian Federation rejects Washington call to cut ties with N Korea

In some of his most robust comments on the subject to date, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also flatly rejected a United States call, made earlier in the day, to cut ties with Pyongyang over its nuclear and ballistic missile programme and said United States policy towards North Korea was deeply flawed.

Lavrov's statements come two days after North Korea launched a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile that is capable of striking the USA mainland.

"If someone really wants to use force to, as the USA representative to the United Nations put it, destroy North Korea. then I think that is playing with fire and a big mistake", Mr Lavrov said, according to Russian news agencies.

Chinese state media wrote a snappy editorial telling the USA to back off from insisting Beijing cut off North Korea.

Last month President Donald Trump said that Russian Federation was hurting United States efforts to disarm the North Korea of its nuclear weapons.

The US ambassador to the UN Security Council Nikki Haley said the North Korean regime would be "utterly destroyed" if war comes. United States experts maintain that China could collapse North Korea's regime in a heartbeat, but it refuses to do so because it would counter Beijing's national interests.

Lavrov said he was referring to joint U.S.

In September, Lavrov explained, the American colleagues hinted that the next exercises are only expected in the spring, Pyongyang can take a pause and also "not to make any sudden movements", and why in this situation not to try to establish a dialogue.

North Korea carried out its new missile test early on Wednesday after a 75-day pause.

Last month, President Donald Trump said Russian Federation was hurting USA efforts to disarm the North Korea of its nuclear weapons.

The missile was topped with a "super-large heavy warhead" and is capable of striking the USA mainland, according to reports from North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency. "We were hopeful about the approach, but then they stage [an] unscheduled exercise in October, then in November, and now they have declared they will have [a] large-scale unscheduled exercise in December". "We have repeatedly stated that the pressure of sanctions has been exhausted."He accused the United States of seeking to provoke Kim Jong-Un's regime".

"So part of [Russia's positioning] is to seem reasonable to South Korea and to ally with China against the US and I think they are largely seen sympathetically by other countries as well, who are quite concerned with the direction in which the U.S".

She said: "We have never sought war with North Korea, and still today we do not seek it".
