Mauricio Pellegrino praised Nathan Redmond's response to his face-off with Pep Guardiola after the midfielder helped Southampton rescue a point at Bournemouth.

Redmond said on Twitter that Guardiola was "only very complimentary and positive" and the City boss was grateful for his comments. "Hopefully, I will improve", Guardiola said, as reported by the Mail Online. "If people don't believe me, we should cancel the press conference".

"I told Redmond that he is a good player; last season he destroyed us with his style, but this time he could not attack us because his team was always in a defensive position, they wasted a lot of time during the game", Guardiola explained at the press conference.

Redmond has insisted no offence was taken and confirmed the City manager's claims that he was merely complimenting the Southampton winger.

The Spaniard said after the game that he was telling 23-year-old "how good a player he is" and how he was unhappy that he didn't openly attack City and instead played for the draw. He (the referee) told me, "you can't do that" and I said "I know".

Guardiola has until December 4 to respond to the English FA's request.

The City boss spoke to the Saints winger following Raheem Sterling's 96th-minute victor and appeared to be confronting him in an aggressive manner. "If they don't believe me, I don't know what I am doing here".

"I played against millions of managers in my career and the different ways they play". We didn't win clearly because it's so complicated when 10 players defend in the box. Everyone wants to win the game, definitely.

Guardiola admitted frustration that Southampton "didn't want to play" and "were time wasting from the ninth minute".

At this stage, there is no misconduct charge levelled against Guardiola, whose side host West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday.

'They didn't want to play, and that's very hard to face.

"It is the same as what I do to beat them".

Guardiola has previous in terms of animated on-field encounters, most famously with Joshua Kimmich after his Bayern Munich team drew 0-0 with Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park in 2016.
