  • Apple Sued Slow Your Roll ... Not Our Old iPhones!!!

Apple on Thursday confirmed what some conspiracy theorists suspected, that it intentionally slows performance of older iPhones as batteries weaken from age. That means the device will unexpectedly shut down to protect its electronic components.

Currently, affected models are iPhone 7, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE, with other models potentially receiving the same feature in the future.

Bogdanovich and Speas alleged Apple breached implied contracts with them and other iPhone owners by "purposefully slowing down older iPhone models when new models come out and by failing to properly disclose that" when they bought their iPhones.

"(But) it is a trade-off.

"This fix will also cause users to think, "my phone is slow so I should replace it" not, "my phone is slow so I should replace its battery".

To address that, Apple's iOS software, starting with last year's iOS 10.2.1, included better power management capabilities, the company says.

"My iPhone 6S has been very slow these past few weeks, and even after updating multiple times, it was still slow", the user named TeckFire wrote.

"Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices".

On Slate, technology writer Will Oremus said Apple's secrecy allowed conspiracy theories about planned obsolescence to thrive.

Secondly, iOS developer Guilherme Ramboā€¸ followed up Mr. Poole's work and found the existence of "Powerd" in iOS code: a power mode which he stated to be "responsible for controlling the CPU/GPU speed and power usage based on iPhone battery health".

As batteries get older, they don't hold their charges as well as newer batteries, and can have worse problems when the charge is low or the temperature is cold. "Try replacing your battery!" went viral.

I don't know about you but to me this smells like a scam that encourages customers upgrade from what should be perfectly fine for several more years iphone's. "That is, your battery won't power your device as long on a given charge".

Apple's admission contradicts earlier information released by benchmarking company Futuremark.

"So that's really not an ideal situation if you're relying on your phone day to day, like most of us are".

Apple is fortunate to be the software maker and hardware maker here, will be interesting to see what tests are conducted on other phones.
