  • Uber hacked, data for 57 million people exposed

Hackers stole data from 57 million Uber users and drivers in 2016What was the Uber data hack?

Uber joined the likes of Google, Sony, Yahoo and Target among companies that have suffered massive data breaches from hackers in recent years.

"I recently learned that in late 2016 we became aware that two individuals outside the company had inappropriately accessed user data stored on a third-party cloud-based service that we use".

According to Khosrowshahi, forensics experts have not seen any evidence that of trip location history, credit numbers, bank account numbers, Social Security numbers, or dates of birth being compromised. It was also revealed that license numbers of drivers which were stolen will be offered free identity theft protection and credit monitoring.

"None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it", said a statement from chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi, who took over at the ridesharing giant in August.

Khosrowshahi also said that he can't erase the past but the company will learn from its mistakes. "The more information a company shares in a timely manner, the better able we are to support them and prevent others falling victim", an NCSC spokesperson said. "All companies would be wise to remember this: cock-ups are bad, but cover-ups can kill you", computer security specialist Graham Cluley said in a blog, adding, "You can ask forgiveness for being hacked, but many people will find it harder to forgive and forget if you deliberately concealed the truth from them". "Companies like Uber will not be able to hide the breaches of our personal data from us or face penalty", she said, without mentioning a sum for an European Union fine for Uber.

William McGeveren, a law professor at the University of Minnesota, suggested in a tweet that Uber may be in violation of legal statutes by breaking data breach disclosure laws and potentially lying to the FTC while under investigation.

Uber also fired two employees who were responsible for providing information to hackers.

In March, Uber officials told the New Hampshire Union Leader that the ride-sharing service had several hundred drivers serving almost 40,000 active riders in New Hampshire.

In September, the agency revealed its EDGAR system, a platform that pools financial reports on publicly traded companies, has been breached in 2016.

Schneiderman's office determined that the earlier hack took advantage of access information posted by an Uber engineer at software development platform Github. To keep the leak secret, Uber paid the hackers a ransom of $100,000. The hack introduces an unexpected factor in negotiations between SoftBank Group Corp. and Uber shareholders over a planned investment of as much as $10 billion, a deal Khosrowshahi has been championing.
