Twitter says it has "implemented safeguards" to prevent Trump account deactivation

  • Departing Twitter employee deactivates Trump's account

Some cheered and others raised concerns when U.S. President Donald Trump's Twitter account, a mouthpiece for the U.S. presidency, mysteriously went dark for a few minutes this week. San Francisco-based Twitter says a customer support employee who was leaving the company is responsible.

The company later said, "We have implemented safeguards to prevent this from happening again". Dorsey said in a tweet that the suspension was "an internal mistake". Trump says the service allows him to get his message out to his supporters without the filter of the media, but it's also allowed him to circumvent his own staff.

"It is shocking that some random Twitter employee could shut down the President's account".

A company representative declined to answer questions including how many employees can suspend an account or what special protections there are for high-profile users like Trump.

While Twitter's customer service employees have the ability to suspend or remove accounts, or delete individual tweets, over violations of service terms, they can not post on someone else's account. "Lone employees shouldn't be able to change statements from the President". Some Twitter users blocked by the account have sued in court, demanding access to the account's tweets, which have been deemed official public statements.

The teams that are most likely to possess the access to deactivate accounts at Twitter are the Trust and Safety team, who are the employees alerted if a user flags a case of harassment or another safety issue - or the Customer Support team, who are there to help if you find you can no longer access your account. "I guess the word must finally be getting out-and having an impact". Twitter has also faced outcry when it temporarily suspended actress Rose McGowan's account while she was speaking out against Harvey Weinstein.

The statement left many question from the tech community and Washington unanswered, including how many people had access to Trump's account and what were the security protocols in dealing with accounts of influential personalities, especially those related to US national security.

Twitter has struggled in recent months in how it enforces, and explains, its procedures for managing accounts that violate its policies created to prevent hate, harassment and other abuse of the platform.

Many praised the temporary shutdown of Trump's account, with users saying the unnamed employee responsible "deserves a medal" and that "not all heroes wear capes". "The nature of social media, particularly Twitter, is that there are so many feeds and so many sources that one single tweet, even one from the President of the United States, can always be balanced by other inputs". All three companies have agreed they could have better during the election.
