  • Thanksgiving Travel: When is the Worst Time to Hit the Road in Southern California?

Highway congestion is expected throughout CT, the Northeast region, and the country as AAA expects 51 million Americans to travel more than 50 miles over the holiday weekend, with the majority driving to their destination.

AAA projects 50.9 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home this Thanksgiving, a 3.3 percent increase over past year.

AAA says more than 1.6 million people living in MI will travel 50 miles or more for turkey and all the trimmings this year.

"Thanksgiving has historically been one of the busiest holidays for road trips, and this year we could see record-level travel delays", says Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. Over the 2016 Thanksgiving holiday period, AAA responded to 536 rescues in South Dakota. Another thing that travelers should keep in mind is the airport crowds, particularly on the day before Thanksgiving, arguably the busiest travel day of the year.

That's because travel is expected to increase this year across the nation.

You'll pay the highest Thanksgiving gas prices since 2014, according to AAA.

The forecast for increased travel comes as gas prices fluctuate, but an improving economy and rising consumer confidence is expected to spur holiday trips, AAA said.

The average price of a gallon of regular gas in Fort Wayne is $2.70, according to GasBuddy.com. And, the vast majority of those travelers will be in cars. The increase in rates may be attributed to an increase in domestic demand and cost of newer vehicles in the fleets with added features and benefits.

With Thanksgiving coming up, many families are getting ready to gas up and hit the road. The average price increased by 14 percent to $176/night. The average rate for a AAA Two Diamond Rated hotel has dropped 5 percent to $117.

Some more advice for novice travelers - that TSA has recently changed their procedures and that "anything larger than a cell phone needs to be taken out of a carry-on bag and put into a bin", said Nipps.

Las Vegas is expected to be one of the top travel destinations in the country behind New York, Honolulu and theme-park cities like Orlando and Anaheim.
