Russia said the Americans actively interfered with Russian airstrikes, to provide cover for the Isis fighters.

Earlier Tuesday, the MoD uploaded images on Facebook and Twitter, which it said were evidence that the USA were actually covering up Islamic State (IS, ISIS/ISIL) combat units.

The militants had been forced to retreat from the city of Abu Kamal in the Syrian province of Deir al-Zour, one of the last remaining IS strongholds in Syria, by the advancing government troops. While they took most of it out, you can still see "ALL CONTENT" at the top right.

In one screengrab, the Russians added the caption: "ISIS automobile convoy leaves Abu Kamal for Syrian-Iraqi border".

The ministry said US-led coalition planes instead tried to impede Russian Aerospace Forces operations in the area.

With the ruse exposed, other users and national security experts were quick to point out that the rest of the photos shared by the Russian Defense Ministry were also fakes [1, 2]. It's not actually from a drone, but from a video game.

AFP was able to compare the images in the emailed defence ministry statement with the images of the videogame on YouTube and confirm the resemblance. A scene in a documentary about Putin made by the United States film-maker Oliver Stone showed Putin playing the director video footage on a telephone of what he said were Russian forces on operations in Syria.

"So again, that is pretty consistent with what we have seen come out of Russian MOD as being baseless, inaccurate and completely false". Adrian J.T. Rankine-Galloway.

In the meantime, the Russian Defense Ministry published new posts [1, 2] with different imagery and blamed the error on an employee.

"The Russian Defense Ministry is investigating its civil service employee who erroneously attached wrong photo illustrations to its statement on interaction between the US-led worldwide coalition and Islamic State militants near [Al-Bukamal], Syria", the ministry said, according to the state-run Tass Russian News Agency. At this time, TASS's original report with the claims against the U.S. is still posted, though the fake photos gave been taken down.

Eliot Higgins, a researcher with Kings College London and Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab, pointed out this was not the first time the Russian Defense Ministry's social media accounts were caught lying.

USA military spokesman Colonel Ryan Dillon called the Russian statements a "barrage of lies", saying they were "as accurate as their air campaign".
