Auctioneer and Global President Jussi Pylkkanen is selling Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi (Savior of the World) painting for $450,312,500 at Christie's, November 15, 2017, in New York City. It was long believed to have existed but was generally presumed to have been destroyed.

Christie's had billed the painting as "the greatest artistic rediscovery of the 21st century" and "the last da Vinci" and exhibited it in Hong Kong, San Francisco, London and NY before Wednesday's auction.

These records were obliterated when Jussi Pylkkänen, Christie's Global President, brought the hammer down on Lot 9 after an extraordinary bidding battle that lasted just short of 20 minutes.

Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece "Salvator Mundi" has sold at Christie's in NY for $450,312,500 - a world auction record for any work of art.

3 - Nu couché, a canvas of Amedeo MODIGLIANI, reached 170,4 million at a sale by the same auction house in November 2015.

There were gasps throughout the sale, as the bids climbed by tens of millions up to $225 million, by fives up to $260 million, and then by twos.

Auctioneer Jussi Pylkkanen takes bids at the auction of Leonardo da Vinci's 'Salvator Mundi' during the Post War and Contemporary Art evening sale at Christie's

Christie's co-chairman Alex Rotter made the winning bid for an unknown client on the phone. 'It's the pinnacle of my career so far. It is also wonderful for an Old Master to be at the centre of such attention. "Despite being created approximately 500 years ago, the work of Leonardo is just as influential to the art that is being created today as it was in the 15th and 16th centuries".

In 1958, the painting was sold for just $60 because it was thought to be a copy.

New world auction records for the artists were set with the first three works offered in the sale: Adam Pendleton's Black Dada (K), Philippe Parreno's My Room Is Another Fish Bowl, and Kerry James Marshall's Still Life with Wedding Portrait. 'But in every team, ' Cerutti added, 'there is a catalyst, and in this case it was Loic Gouzer'.

The rare Leonardo da Vinci painting "Salvator Mundi" was bought for the large amount in NY, according to CNN International. That is the magic of his work'. When a controversial piece of such dubious authenticity is sold at prices no museum can afford, making it available only to the increasingly indistinguishable cliques of oligarchs and their head-of-state business pals, it contributes to a market where expertise and devotion to art are dispensed with; the final word on what's a Leonardo and what isn't goes to the highest bidder, not the most knowledgeable or most dedicated scholar.

With much of public-facing art world firmly turning its back on the Trumps, it's yet another example of the fraught, high-stakes interests at play.
