OnePlus 5T won't feature wireless charging, says CEO Pete Lau

The OnePlus 5T will arrive in a week, as OnePlus confirmed that it will be announced on November 16 in NY, and the company's CEO just shared some new info on Weibo (Chinese social network).

They're solid points, but it nearly sounds like he's arguing from an either/or perspective, when in reality adding wireless charging support to the OnePlus 5T wouldn't remove Dash Charge, it would just give you more choice, and surely therefore more convenience.

The problem that Lau highlighted here is that wireless charging is restricting compared with wired charging. And all the users should use dash charging as it is clearly the faster alternative. It juices up the phone to 60% in a half an hour. Giving more reasons for not incorporating wireless charging, he added, "Dash Charge gives you enough power for the day with just one charging session".

Lau added that the company will implement wireless charging technology when the customers are capable of accepting the feature. However, in order to introduce wireless charging, the Cupertino-based company has launched the 2017 iPhones with glass chassis.

However, OnePlus has not dismissed the idea of wireless charging in their phones. Ultimately, this restricts you to take a selfie with your camera or play a game. 30 minutes charging done with dash charge technology will keep your phone's battery live for an entire day. Instead, Lau touts OnePlus' own Dash wired charging technology as the preferred choice. And you can't use your phone while it charges, since picking it up will stop the charging. This is nice in theory, but isn't as simple as it sounds in practical, notes Lau.

Case in point, the Sign-up form requires you submit a short (300-word) review of the most impressive phone you've ever used, as well as a selection of the best smartphone photographs you've ever taken.

By leaving wireless charging support for a future model, OnePlus has joined the club of Google that brought the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL earlier this year with only wired charging option.

Lau's reasoning does seem to make sense, but it doesn't make mention of the convenience of wireless charging. He believes that this - wireless technology has a lot of space to develope now.

OnePlus says it is launching another edition of The Lab, a section of the forum devoted just for the OnePlus 5T community.

As a product guy, it's exciting to see technology advance from theory to implementation.
