Net Neutrality is to be abandoned by the FCC

  • FCC Chairman working to eliminate net neutrality

The plan ignores thousands of consumer complaints and millions of individual comments that request that the FCC save net neutrality "and uphold the principles that all traffic should be created equal", the fact sheet states.

"Under my proposal, the federal government will stop micromanaging the Internet", Pai wrote in a statement announcing the new rules.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), led by Chairman Ajit Pai, would be voting to kill the Net Neutrality Rules that are now in effect next month. "This week, they are working to rig the internet to do the same".

Those who advocate for net neutrality say undoing these rules makes it harder for the government to crack down on internet providers who act against consumer interests and that it will will harm innovation.

Pai distributed his alternative plan to other FCC commissioners Tuesday in preparation for a December 14 vote.

The FCC's proposal also puts additional pressure on Capitol Hill, where some lawmakers have called for federal legislation that would supersede any FCC rules.

Former Democratic FCC chairman Tom Wheeler, who drafted the 2015 net neutrality rules, called Tuesday's move "tragic", adding that "if you like your cable company, you'll love what this does for the internet". He said his office and the FCC have shared information with one another before, but that despite offers to keep the records confidential, as done in the past, NY officials have "received no substantive response to our investigative requests". It said repealing the rules would strengthen consumer protections by giving authority regarding the internet to a single USA regulator, the Federal Trade Commission.

US Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) criticized the FCC for failing to turn over its internal analysis of the DDoS attacks that hit the FCC's public comment system. Capital expenditure in broadband declined by 5.6 percent since Title II was adopted in 2015, which amounted to over $3.6 billion in lost investment. "We see that in the record, too, that some companies have held off with new service offerings because they're not sure whether they would be allowed under the rules".

"In 2015, the Democrats of the FCC decided that it was time to go all in, and what they did was essentially reclassified Internet providers, and started treating them as utility-style companies".

In a statement, Google expressed disappointment with Pai's plan. "So, that's definitely what we're proposing to return to, the bipartisan consensus [that] governed the internet for many years".

Net neutrality is the concept that all internet traffic should be treated equally, no matter what internet service provider is carrying it. Currently, over 62 million do not have access to fast internet, mostly in urban centers and rural areas. "What they are telling me is not that their ISP is blocking access to lawful content, it's that they don't have access at all, or that they don't have enough competition".

"It's a signature accomplishment for Pai's chairmanship", said Fred Campbell, director of the conservative think tank Tech Knowledge.

Here's a look at what the developments mean for consumers and companies. "And I think the entire digital economy will be better off for it".
