MICROSOFT LIKES big campuses and it can not lie, which is why its re-building its Seattle headquarters to fit in an extra 8,000 workers.
The work will be done about the same time that the Redmond light-rail station opens, scheduled for 2023.
Microsoft added that the construction project will take between five- and seven-years to complete and involves replacing 12-low rise buildings with 18 new offices, many of which will be double the height.
The company today revealed plans to launch a multibillion-dollar overhaul of its headquarters in the Seattle suburb of Redmond. Microsoft said this will foster creativity and innovation.
"And with the Microsoft announcement, it shows that at least one major corporation believes that the Pacific Northwest has talent and can bring in more people to satisfy their needs".
The reworking of the Redmond, Washington campus is part of CEO Satya Nadella's vision for Microsoft.
When complete, the company's campus will boast 131 total buildings - up from 125 following the demolition of 12 current buildings - and hold room for up to 8,000 more people on top of the 47,000 that already work on the facility.
It wasn't that long ago that Microsoft revealed its new meeting spaces built in the treetops. But as its ongoing search for a second headquarters highlights in no uncertain terms, the space-constrained Puget Sound region has few large undeveloped areas appropriate for an expansion that would accommodate up to 50,000 workers-the number Amazon said it may someday employ at its HQ2. Further, Smith told GeekWire that the company does not intend to offload any of its downtown Bellevue space or vacate the offices in Issaquah, where it recently renewed a big lease. That coexistence is underscored by the three new treehouses on Microsoft's campus - actual wooden huts set high among the trees that the company uses for natural, but unheated, conference rooms. The expansion will also include $150 million in transportation infrastructure updates, public spaces, sports fields, and a green space.
