  • Packers Cut Martellus Bennett, But Don't Bank On Patriots Reunion

The Patriots have claimed the veteran tight end off waivers a day after he was cut loose by the Packers, according to ESPN and other outlets. He did not play in the 30-17 loss on Monday to the Detroit Lions.

For starters, three of Bennett's seven touchdowns last season came in one game (Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns).

Green Bay waived him with the designation of failure to disclose a medical condition, which they hope will help them recoup the remaining $4.2 million on his signing bonus. Allen, however, has not recorded a catch in eight games this season, and in part because of that, the Patriots' offense has struggled in the red zone.

Earlier this season, Bennett suggested he was considering retirement after the 2017 season.

In order to make room for the Bennett, the Patriots have reportedly released defensive lineman, Geneo Grissom.

"Martellus Bennett will not practice this week, he will not be available for the game", coach Mike McCarthy said before Wednesday's practice.

Bennett might not be quite as productive in 2017 with Gronkowski still healthy and his role decreased, but adding Bennett was a no-brainer for the Patriots who elected to stand pat at the trade deadline despite some apparent needs.

For Bennett, it means a return to New England, where he won a Super Bowl last season. Bennett was released by the Packers on Wednesday, following a three-year, $21 million contract he signed as a free-agent in March.

The Packers have two other tight ends on the roster in Lance Kendricks and Richard Rodgers.
