  • Mary Keitany after winning New York

The Massachusettes native said earlier that if she were to win her first major marathon on Sunday, it could be her last 26.2-mile race at age 36.

In men's event, Kamworor held off compatriot Wilson Kipsang's challenge to win at a time of 2:10:53.

Thousands of police lined the course as part of heightened security because of the incident.

American Shalane Flanagan and Kenya's Geoffrey Kamworor won women's and men's titles apiece at the 2017 New York Marathon on Sunday.

With tears in her eyes, pointing and shouting (with maybe a few colorful words thrown in), Flanagan won the race with a time of 2 hours 26 minutes 53 seconds. She was also the 10,000m runner-up at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

When crunch time came it was Flanagan, not Keitany, who dominated, impressively leading the final three miles. Kenya's Wilson Kipsang took second place, finishing in 2:10:56, and Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia, victor of the 2013 and 2015 Boston Marathons, finished third in 2:11:32.

It was Flanagan's first marathon of the year following a left hip injury in January.

"I'm so happy. I feel so great to be the champion", Kamworor said.

Flanagan placed sixth in the women's marathon in at the Rio Olympics a year ago, the top American finish.

The wheelchair division was a sweep for Swiss athletes, with Manuela Schar and Marcel Eric Hug winning.

Flanagan's win shut down a record-breaking moment for the women's race runner-up, Mary Keitany.

Repeat victor Marcel Hug gave Switzerland the men's title in equally dominant fashion, defending his championship in 1:37:21, more than two minutes ahead of British runner-up John Charles Smith.
