  • One of the fidget spinners contained more than 300 times the legal amount of lead allowed in children's toys. The sellers maintain the item is not for kids

A consumer advocacy group recently found that some fidget spinners being sold at Target stores across the nation contain high levels of lead.

U.S. PIRG Toxics Director Kara Cook-Shultz told CBS News that the Target website described the two spinner models for ages "6 and up" on the retailer's website, but the product page now reflects a "14 and older" description.

The items - Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass and Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal - were found to contain as much as 330 times the federal legal limit for lead in children's products, according to lab tests conducted for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG) Education Fund.

Fidget spinners may be popular, and high on many holiday gift lists, but an OR mother and a consumer advocacy group have found high levels of lead in some of the toys, and the defense offered by one retailer might be much help to most parents considering a purchase.

Target is hawking fidget spinners that contain unsafe amounts of lead, according to a consumer advocacy group.

Congress grills former Equifax, Yahoo CEOs over identity data breaches
Indeed, the former CEO said, much of the facts behind the breaches remain shrouded in mystery. They answered questions about the Equifax breach in September and Yahoo's in March.

However, after Target and the manufacturer were provided the results of US PIRG's findings, they decided not to pull the toys from their shelves or from their website. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says fidget spinners are a choking hazard in a warning for parents.

"Safety is one of our top priorities", Howard Chizick, a spokesman for Bulls-I-Toys, said in an email. "Framed as a toy, the fidget spinner is also a great stress-relief tool", the online description reads. The group says parents should check for the age recommendation on the package - anything for children under 12 are subject to a range of tests, including for lead.

Lead-based paint, old toys, imported ceramics, alternative medicines and spices were the major culprits of the 1,200 reported cases of elevated lead levels in Minnesota previous year. That's because the two Fidget Wild Premium Spinner varieties are labeled for those age 14+.

Bulls-I-Toy, the maker of the fidget spinner, said the packaging clearly says that the spinner is for youngsters who are at least 14-years-old.

U.S. PIRG publishes an annual report on toy safety, which has led to more than 150 product recalls and regulatory actions over the past 30 years.
