The State of Washington's Attorney General filed a complaint against Uber Technologies, Inc., (Uber) yesterday related to the 2016 hack that exposed the personal data of 57 million riders and drivers. The organisation has already parted company with its chief security officer, Joe Sullivan, over the 13-month cover-up.

"We have seen no evidence of fraud or misuse tied to the incident", Uber said in a statement.

About 50 million Uber passengers had their names, addresses and phone numbers breached, but the hackers also got driver's license numbers for about 7 million Uber drivers, including 10,888 in Washington, Ferguson said.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) had previously said it had "huge concerns" about the breach. "However, its use may make other scams, such as bogus emails or calls appear more credible".

Central to the lawsuit are claims that Uber failed to protect its data and, once the breach occurred, actively went out of its way to hide this. And in Italy, the only European Union country to have announced a full-blown investigation into the Uber incident before Wednesday, the fine may be more than $1 million, with the amount being related to the number of Italians who were affected. People should continue to be vigilant and follow the advice from the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

In ICO's report, the regulator said: "Uber has confirmed its data breach in October 2016 affected approximately 2.7million user accounts in the UK".

Separately, prosecutors in the U.S. have heard that Uber may have hired ex-CIA intelligence operatives to conduct surveillance on its rivals.

In a statement given to the INQUIRER, the ICO said: "It's always the company's responsibility to identify when United Kingdom citizens have been affected as part of a data breach and take steps to reduce any harm to consumers".

The Dutch data protection authority will take the lead, as Uber's worldwide headquarters are sited in Amsterdam.

That revelation prompted a delay in a high-profile trial over whether Uber stole self-driving auto technology from Waymo, a Google spinoff.
