  • A driverless shuttle in Las Vegas crashed just hours after it was unveiled Wednesday

The autonomous shuttle was testing today when it was grazed by a delivery truck downtown.

A Las Vegas-based self-driving shuttle service celebrated its launch day by getting into an accident with a human driver, according to a news report from local Nevada broadcast station KSNV News 3. The exact circumstances of the accident are unknown; we have no idea if the autonomous shuttle was simply unable to back up to avoid the accident or if there was another vehicle too close to the shuttle bus to allow it to reverse out of harm's way. The shuttle, made by the French company Navya ARMA, began a route looping it around Vegas's downtown.

The shuttle makes a continuous loop in downtown Las Vegas, and the rides are free. The shuttle's sensors registered the truck and performed the correct actions, the rep said, by stopping to avoid the accident.

It does seem however that this technology is not quite ready yet though, after a self-driving bus crashed just two hours after launching. If a vehicle leaves its own lane and careens towards an autonomous shuttle such as this, will it simply stop and wait for the inevitable crash, or take evasive maneuvers as a human would?

Disney plans to spend $1B on theme parks after profit falls
Disney reported earnings that fell short of expectations, sending the stock down after hours Thursday . Furthermore, the studio will produce "four or five" movies a year, exclusively for the Disney service.

Nearly all the incidents recorded by Waymo, Google's autonomous vehicle arm, have been down to human drivers hitting the vehicles, and a major crash involving Uber's driverless cars in March was down to the driver of the other auto.

The shuttle can be boarded at any of the three stops located on Fremont and Carson Streets between Las Vegas Boulevard and 8th Street. Testing of the shuttle will continue during the 12-month pilot in the downtown Innovation District.

The account also tweeted: 'We are at the forefront of technology'. But, the truck continued backing up until its tires touched the front of the shuttle. Police say no injuries were reported crash between the self-operating vehicle and a semi-truck.
