  • CBS suspends Charlie Rose; PBS halts his show after allegations

CBS This Morning anchor Charlie Rose, who has also hosted a long-standing interview show distributed by both PBS and Bloomberg, was suspended by all three companies on Monday after The Washington Post reported allegations of sexual harassment by eight women.

Rose was a co-host of "CBS This Morning" alongside Norah O'Donnell and Gayle King, who reacted to the news this morning on the show.

PBS quickly suspended distribution of the Charlie Rose programme following the allegations, which they described as "deeply disturbing".

"Despite Charlie's important journalistic contribution to our news division, there is absolutely nothing more important, in this or any organization, than ensuring a safe, professional workplace_a supportive environment where people feel they can do their best work", CBS News President David Rhodes said in a memo to staff on Tuesday. This followed the revelation yesterday of extremely disturbing and intolerable behavior said to have revolved around his PBS program.

King said, "This is not the man I know", describing a five-year friendship with Rose that began when they launched the morning show together in 2012.

Reuters could not independently verify the accounts of the women.

Eight women have told The Washington Post that veteran television host Charlie Rose sexually harassed them between the late 1990s and 2011. The allegations include unwanted sexual advances, lewd phone calls, walking around naked in their presence, and groping.

Rose issued a statement to the Post that he is "greatly embarrassed".

King and O'Donnell said they have not yet spoken with Rose, but meant to today.

She said Rose had groped her multiple times and claimed he once summoned her to his hotel room and emerged naked from the shower.

"It would usually entail some version of him also touching me", said Godfrey-Ryan. I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realise I was mistaken.

"I explained how he inappropriately spoke to me during those times", Godfrey-Ryan said.

He sent a statement to the Post saying he apologized for his inappropriate behavior. "I failed. It is crushing".

'I have learned a great deal as a result of these events and I hope others will too.

Rose said he had now "come to a profound new respect for women and their lives".
