  • Chisako Kakehi 70 had a series of husbands and boyfriends who died in mysterious circumstances

70-year-old Japenese woman has been sentenced to death for the murder of three men, including her husband, and another attempted murder.

Kyoto District Court Judge Ayako Nakagawa sentenced Chisako Kakehi to death by hanging.

She was also accused of killing her common-law partners Masanori Honda, 71, and Minoru Hioki, 75, and for attempting to murder acquaintance Toshiaki Suehiro, 79.

"It was a heinous crime driven by greed for money", the judge said.

"Even if I were executed tomorrow, I would die smiling", Kakehi reportedly told judges.

Cyanide was hidden in a plant pot owned by Kakehi.

In the first public hearing, Kakehi said she would leave everything to her lawyers, but her statements lacked coherence and she once admitted to committing murder during proceedings.

The court underlined that Kakehi did not suffer dementia when she committed the last crime in December 2013.

It said Kakehi poisoned the victims with cyanide after becoming the beneficiary of their wills.

Her lawyers plan to appeal, "suggesting the high-profile trial could yet drag on", the website adds.

Prosecutors sought capital punishment while her defense counsel pleaded not guilty to the crime due to a lack of physical evidence, also arguing that she can not be held responsible as she suffers from dementia.

There was some controversy over the sentence, as Kakehi was exhibiting signs of early onset dementia at the time of the murders.

Kakehi initially refused to speak when her trial began in June but later stunned the court by admitting killing her fourth husband in 2013.

According to the BBC, Kakehi had three other husbands who all passed away, though she has not been charged with any crime in relation to their deaths.

Kakehi first Wednesday at the age of 24, launching a fabric-printing company in Osaka Prefecture with her first husband.

Her first husband died in 1994 and the business later went bust, prompting her to take out massive loans.

She is married with four of them and made them acquainted through marriage agencies, which to him had, at his request, older men, wealthy, without children and living alone. She earned an inheritance of approximately 1bn yen (£6.88m, $8.84m) but now it has been said that she lost much of her wealth through financial trading.
