Earlier in the evening, Mr Trump has said they would be discussing the most pressing military issues facing the country, including tensions with North Korea and Iran.

Citing "people briefed" on the matter, the Washington Post reports Trump is expected to deliver a speech, possibly on October 12, laying out his administration's new Iranian policy.

He also used the meeting to make clear his continued displeasure with Iran - accusing the country of "breaking the spirit" of the worldwide agreement signed in 2015 aimed at curbing the country's nuclear programme.

USA Donald Trump's president, in 2015, was prepared to cancel nuclear deal signed with Iranduring period of US President Barack Obama.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Trump is also expected to roll out a broader USA strategy on Iran that would be more confrontational. If he argues that Iran is not in compliance, that could cause an American withdrawal from the worldwide pact.
