TransCanada terminates Energy East pipeline

The 4,500-kilometer (roughly 2,800 miles) Energy East pipeline was planned to run from Alberta and Saskatchewan to the refineries of Eastern Canada and a marine terminal in New Brunswick, carrying about 1.1 million barrels of crude oil a day. In the summer of 2016, the National Energy Board's review of Energy East was compromised after it was revealed by the National Observer that former Quebec Premier Jean Charest met the chairman and two commissioners on the National Energy Board while working for TransCanada.

"I think the federal government has erred there and I think it's incumbent on the Trudeau government to come clean on what they want the NEB to do so that we don't make this mistake in the future as well", Nenshi said.

Energy East would have carried oil from Alberta and Saskatchewan to refineries on the east coast for processing, and shipment overseas.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley has championed TransCanada's Energy East pipeline project as a way to provide revenue and jobs to her province's struggling economy.

The company TransCanada announced today that it will abandon its plans to build the Energy East and Eastern Mainline pipelines, controversial projects due to their possible environmental damages.

The pipeline's importance has somewhat diminished for TransCanada since the United States this year approved Keystone XL pipeline, which would run from Alberta to US refineries, but supporters said they were "extremely disappointed" by the decision. "Energy East is dead!" he tweeted in French.

In a statement released by TransCanada, the company said it is now reviewing the company's $1.3 billion carrying value.

October 8, 2015: Environmental group Environmental Defence says the National Energy Board is rushing the process for Energy East by gathering oral traditional evidence from aboriginal bands before it has received a complete application.

"The abandonment of the Energy East project is a major victory for the municipal world", Coderre wrote. The company says the filing with the National Energy Board makes almost 700 changes to the route in response to concerns for environmentally sensitive areas. Companies are not eager to invest in expensive tar sands projects unless the price of oil comes back up.

TransCanada will also notify Quebec's Ministère du Developpement durable, de l'Environnement, et Lutte contre les changements climatiques that it is withdrawing the Energy East project from the environmental review process. The Calgary-based company refused to give further explanation.

"Energy, pipeline and climate issues have been among the most highly charged political debates in Canada for several years", said Abacus chairman Bruce Anderson.

Reaction across the country has been mixed.

Irving Oil has worked together with TransCanada on this project since it was first announced in 2013.

Oil prices have roughly halved since 2014. "We accepted the reversal of Enbridge's Line 9B (pipeline through Montreal), but we ensured there were measures in place to follow up and protect the community. Governments need to step up with a plan to assist oil sands workers in transitioning into clean energy jobs".
