NRA calls for regulation of 'bump stocks' after Las Vegas massacre

  • Rep. Adam Kinzinger Seeks Review of'Bump Stocks Used in Las Vegas Massacre

Texas Rep. Bill Flores, a gun owner, told The Hill,"I think they should be banned".

For his part, Ryan has said he'd be open to a vote on banning the bump stock devices.

"Bump stocks" were virtually unheard of on Capitol Hill until this week. The gunman, Stephen Paddock, had a stockpile of 23 guns in his room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

While the call surprised many given the NRA's reluctance to endorse previous reforms after mass-shooting tragedies, the group also called on Congress to pass legislation requiring states to recognize other states' concealed carry permits, suggesting they may use the bump stock proposal as bargaining.

"I think the NRA is playing games with the public", said Harris. "I keep my powder dry for the important fights".

The White House also said Thursday that it was opening to regulating the devices - but wants to hear more information on the matter before making a final determination.

What may have made this an easier call for the gun lobby and pro-gun conservatives, though, is market obscurity. It was created ostensibly to help people with disabilities more easily fire AK- and AR-platform long guns.

In the days since Sunday's Las Vegas shooting that killed at least 59 people and left more than 500 wounded, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has been silent. Almost 500 people were also wounded. The accelerated interval between rounds can be as fast as a fully automatic weapon, though there's some debate among gun experts about whether a gun equipped with a bump stock actually becomes a more lethal weapon.

He encouraged it. " You can stand me up at the gates of hell / But I won't back down! ". "I'm mostly just a reefer guy", he says. In the biography, Petty spoke candidly to Zanes about the abuse he suffered as a child and his struggles with heroin addiction.

Meanwhile, similar legislation to regulate bump stocks in emerging in the House of Representatives. "So we'll see what kind of legislation is proposed".

"The real test is what happens when legislation is on the table". We recognize that they may be fun to use for some recreational shooters.

If Democrats push for legislation cracking down on general rates of fire, it could be exceedingly hard to enforce, given all various hacks and devices on the market. While the NRA signaled support for new restrictions on bump stocks, it said it remained opposed to further action on gun control.

"Automatic weapons are illegal", Wisconsin Sen.

For now, at least, bipartisan support on a bill restricting bump stocks allows Republicans and Democrats to say they passed something - anything - in response to the massacre in Vegas, the deadliest mass shooting in modern USA history. As FRONTLINE reported in the 2015 documentary Gunned Down: The Power of the NRA, the NRA has fiercely resisted more stringent gun control policy, exercising a sizeable operating budget and considerable influence on lawmakers in Congress.

Nelson Lund, a Second Amendment expert at George Mason University, was unaware of the device until recently.

"I talked to Chairman [Chuck] Grassley of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and I believe that once the investigation is complete and we learn all aspects of what contributed to this event, then we should have a hearing and look into it", Cornyn said, referring to the Iowa Republican. "Since that time, I've learned something I didn't know".

Just five years later, the country is once again reeling, this time from the deadliest mass shooting in its history.
