  • Microsoft edges above US$600 billion market cap

Despite doom and gloom about its platforms, Microsoft had no problem impressing investors and analysts this quarter, generating earnings of $0.84 per share, well beyond the $0.72 per share analysts were expecting.

Revenues rose 11.7% from past year to $24.5 billion, also topping analysts' view for $23.57 billion.

Three quarters before a self-imposed deadline to achieve $20 billion in annualized revenue from its commercial cloud products and services, Microsoft announced Thursday that it had achieved that goal. That's in large part to the continued growth of Microsoft's cloud business. To Productivity and Business Processes, LinkedIn contributed $1.1 billion. The KeyBanc analysts had expected $1.64 billion in gaming revenue, which would have been down 13 percent.

Microsoft Corp. has ridden the cloud-computing wave for several quarters, and once again its revenues surged on the strength of its emerging business of selling web-based, on-demand computing services.

Intelligent Cloud segment, which includes its Azure on-demand computing services, revenues increased 14 percent to $6.9 billion, with Azure revenues surging 90 percent.

As you can see from the image above, the biggest areas of growth, in terms of percentage, are Azure, Dynamics 365, and Office 365 commercial. Azure commands an impressive 90 percent revenue increase from this time previous year and income from its office products has gone up as well. The rest is a 2% (2% in CC) increase in server revenue.

Operating income was $7.7 billion and increased 15%.

MPC (more personal computing) segment derives the majority of its revenues from the PC (personal computing) market. As for the Xbox division, revenue increased by only 1 percent, Xbox software and services revenue growth saw an increase of 21 percent offset by lower hardware revenue.

Microsoft reported revenue of $24.5 billion for the quarter, up almost 12 percent over the same period previous year.

While the Azure cloud platform is included in this number, Microsoft sadly doesn't break out Azure revenue numbers. Thursday reported an increase in profit for the first-quarter that trumped analysts' estimates, driven largely by strong growth in cloud business, as the software giant continues bank on its rapidly growing cloud business.
