El Pais, the Spanish newspaper, reports that the government will have the ability to take control of TV3, the primary television channel of Catalan public broadcaster Televisió de Catalunya, "to ensure the transmission of 'truthful and objective information balanced".

He tweeted: "Today more than ever, let's defend democracy and civil and political rights".

Mr Rajoy said he was concerned about the financial impact if Catalonia broke away, stressing the latest figures on the economy were "worrying". The central government says the results have no legitimacy.

Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont called for a meeting of the autonomous community's parliament to discuss measures that could be taken in response to the Spanish government's decision to invoke Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution.

Mariano Rajoy announced the move after a crisis meeting of his cabinet following this month's independence referendum deemed illegal by Madrid.

Basque nationalists and the far-left Podemos party were among those in Madrid opposing the government's move. Many anti-independence supporters boycotted the ballot and claimed it was not valid.

All of these measures are to be carried out under the unprecedented auspices of Article 155 of the Constitution, which allows Madrid to impose direct rule, and are pending a vote from the Senate, the upper house of Spain's parliament. "A serious attack on the rights and freedoms of everyone".

In a YouTube video posted by an account linked to Anonymous, the group announced actions that would be rolled out on Saturday as part of an "Operation Free Catalonia".

"The Spanish government has undertaken the worse attack on the institutions and the people of Catalonia since [Francisco] Franco", Puigdemont said in an evening statement, referring to the dictator that ruled Spain from 1939 to 1975.

The measures could include stripping some or all of the top Catalan officials of their authority and laying out a roadmap to an early regional election for as early as January.

Its implementation, as explained by the prime minister, is based on four objectives of the government: return to legality, restore normalcy and coexistence, continue economic recovery and hold to elections in the region.

His proposals, under the never-used-before article 155 of the constitution, will nevertheless put an end to Catalonia's home rule prerogative, and mark an escalation of Spain's biggest political crisis since a failed coup d'etat in 1981.

Rajoy's ruling Popular Party has an absolute majority in the chamber and is expected to receive wide support from opposition senators for measures to protect Spanish unity.

The State Attorney General José Manuel Maza confirmed on Saturday that "a complaint is being prepared for rebellion" against the President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, and other independence leaders.
