Meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Topeka are working to predict what Hurricane Irma will do next.

In a posting made to both its Facebook and Twitter channels, the team in Mount Holly advised anyone with friends and family in South Florida to encourage them to listen to advice from local officials with regard to evacuation orders.

"Wind will be the main impact across our area during Irma".

Irma, the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic, won't be as powerful once it makes landfall and moves north.

The technology is nothing fancy.

The balloons rise to 80,000 to 100,000 feet before deflating and slowly falling downwind, the office said. That information is passed to a weather service supercomputer in Maryland that maps the atmosphere and creates weather models. The measurements also help provide ground truth for what satellites are seeing. Typically, weather balloon launches occur every twelve hours.

The extra launches will continue until Irma leaves US soil or weakens. Such a large and coordinated effort involving extra launches is fairly rare, usually reserved for hurricanes that could do major damage and come with a particularly uncertain forecast, says Griffin, whose office is participating in the extra releases. Based on the current forecast track we aren't expecting a widespread flooding threat but this remains very uncertain at this time. "The more data that we can get, or gather north of that region, the better predictions for where that hurricane path will be", Rozanski, explained.

Irma might bring severe weather to Athens, but its effects might also be mild.
