In regards to underweight models, it was just this May that Louis Vuitton came under fire for booting a model from its show who was just a size 2, so these guidelines come at a particularly poignant time.

The use of models as young as 14 and 15 in fashion shows is another point of controversy that the Kering and LVMH charter addresses.

The new charter says that female models must be at least a French size 32 (equivalent to a United Kingdom size 4 or a USA 2) in future.

The groups are also trying to defend themselves against charges of causing eating disorders both among models and among women at large by promoting "size zero" images. The charter also stipulates that models must be able to make a direct complaint to the brand "in the case of a dispute with a modelling agency, a casting director or a brand".

In May, a French law hit the statute books requiring models to present a doctor's certificate proving they are healthy to work according to their BMI, age, gender and body shape.

In addition, models below the age of 16 must not be hired by brands to take part in shows or shootings representing an adult.

Two fashion powerhouses Kering and LVMH have banned USA size zero models, which is a size four in Australia, from the runway and advertising.

Models must now present health certificates to their employers showing that they are a healthy weight and fit to work for the brands.

'I am deeply committed to ensuring that the working relationship between LVMH Group brands, agencies and models goes beyond simply complying with the legal requirements.

This project was put in place by the two major fashion firms LVMH and Kering, which look after a string of prestigious label, including Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs, Fendi and Stella McCartney.

The fashion companies' said their agreement would take effect this month, in time for the spring-summer ready-to-wear runway collections.

"We hope to inspire the entire industry to follow suit, thus making a real difference in the working conditions of fashion models industry-wide".

A study published in the American Journal of Public Health in 2015 examined the thinness of models.

"As the leaders in the luxury industry, we estimate that it's our duty to be in line with this initiative", he said.
