Sumlin: Starkel, Wilson to miss considerable time with injury

  • Texas A&M QB Nick Starkel in walking boot after loss

Sumlin's Aggies blew a 34-point lead during Sunday's 45-44 loss to UCLA and that prompted regent Tony Buzbee to deliver harsh criticism that included calling for Sumlin to be fired.

"People are frustrated", he said. "It's a unique way to start off with a new OC and a new relationship, but I'm happy how it went", Rosen said, via ESPN.

"Our coaches were dominated on national TV, yet again", Buzbee wrote on Facebook.

Sumlin has two years remaining on his contract after this season and is paid $5 million annually. "I don't really have time to get involved in things that are said about the program or about me". "Our players were more talented tonight. We've had a heck of a spring, recruiting is going well but coach knows he has to win and win this year and we have to do better than we've done in the past".

Virginia Tech holds off West Virginia 31-24 in thrilling opener
Redshirt freshman quarterback Josh Jackson threw for 236 yards and a touchdown for the Hokies, while rushing for 101 and a score. Somehow, the best player on the Virginia Tech offense got left all alone in the West Virginia secondary, and he capitalized.

"You have to block it out when you're at this level", running back Trayveon Williams said.

It's arguable that A&M wouldn't have blown the lead had Starkel not gotten hurt. The nationally televised loss to UCLA certainly upped the pressure. A redshirt freshman, Starkel completed 6 of 13 passes for 62 yards before exiting the game in the third quarter with the injury.

Next up for the Aggies is a home game against Nicholls, which should be just the salve Sumlin and his team needs to get well. Both players had surgery to fix injuries suffered in the loss to UCLA.

Assuming Starkel is out for the season, it's reasonable to wonder if his absence is more season changing and program changing for Texas A&M than QB Deondre Francois' knee injury is for Florida State.
