Residents are urged to take precautions after mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus were trapped in the Twin Cities, health officials said.

Escambia's two confirmed West Nile cases in 2016 were in August and September, when temperatures were high and rain was plentiful.

There is no vaccine for humans for mosquito-borne diseases, nor is there a specific treatment, according to the health department.

"People may feel, with the end of summer approaching, that the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes is reduced", said Dr. Charles Gardner, Medical Officer of Health for the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.

Apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR 3535 according to label instructions.
