The princess - who is expected to marry her fiancé, law clerk Kei Komuro, in 2018- met Komuro at Tokyo's International Christian University and the two have been dating for five years.

The two met during their freshman year and became close in 2012 when they took part in an orientation session for study overseas programs.

The eldest daughter of Japanese Emperor Akihito officially confirmed her engagement in a a press conference on the Akasaka Estate in Toyko on Sunday.

"I was aware since my childhood that I'll leave a royal status once I marry", she said.

Kei Komuro and Princess Mako, both 25, marriage news can be good for some but may not for the royal family. In return, Komuro replied that the princess has been watching over him "like the moon". The formal announcement, that stunned all, was released by Japan's Imperial Household Agency on Sunday.

Kei Komuro actually proposed to the Princess in 2013 and now she has spoken about their love for the first time.

The couple is expected to tie the knot in the same year Emperor Akihito will relinquish the throne. If he does, he will become the first emperor to be a part of a grandchild's marriage ceremony in modern Japan.

However, the happy news also bears with it the foreboding that it could spell disaster for the future of a royal family facing concerns about a declining population to keep their 2,600-year-old bloodline going. She also received a Master's degree in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester in 2016.

Their slow-burning relationship gave her time to learn that Komuro is 'a honest, strong-minded, hard worker, and he has a big heart, ' Mako said.
